What is included

What does pool service cover?

  • Cleaning and water chemistry on a recurring route.
  • Pump, filter and heater repair or replacement.
  • Draining for repair or resurfacing, by a licensed pool contractor.
  • Before and after photos attached to each visit.

Emergencies

When is it an emergency?

Pool service is not dispatched as an emergency; it runs on a route. A pump or filter that has failed and closed the pool can go out as urgent, for the same day.

Sparking at the pump equipment is not a pool call at all. It is an electrical emergency.

Licensing

What license does a vendor need in Florida?

General information, not legal advice.

Florida licenses pool work in three classes under section 489.105 of the Florida Statutes. A commercial pool/spa contractor can build, repair and service any pool, public or private. A residential pool/spa contractor does the same for residential pools. A swimming pool/spa servicing contractor's scope is repair and servicing, of public and private pools alike.

The servicing license covers repairing or replacing existing equipment, installing new equipment, refinishing, pool heaters, perimeter and filter piping, cleaning or sanitizing that takes equipment at least partly apart (filter changes aside), and substantially draining a pool for repair. None of the three licenses covers a direct connection to a sanitary sewer or a potable water line.

Routine service needs no license. The same section says no license is required to clean a pool or spa in a way that does not affect its structure or its equipment, or to treat the water, so long as no equipment is installed, modified or replaced.

Any Florida license can be checked by name or number on the state's Verify a Licensee search at myfloridalicense.com.

Pool service work for vendors

Questions

Questions about pool service.

Does a pool cleaner need a license in Florida?

Not for routine cleaning or water chemistry. Section 489.105 of the Florida Statutes says no license is required for cleaning that does not affect the pool's structure or equipment. Repairing or replacing the equipment takes a pool/spa contractor license.

Is a broken pool pump an emergency?

No. Pool service is never treated as an emergency, though a failed pump or filter that has closed the pool can go out as urgent, for the same day.
