Emergencies
When is it an emergency?
Appliance repair is not dispatched as an emergency. A refrigerator or a range that has stopped working in an occupied unit is urgent: same day. A dishwasher or a dryer that can wait is standard, with a 48-hour target in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties.
Water from a dishwasher or a washer that has reached the floor, or the unit below, is a different job. That is plumbing, and restoration if the water has soaked in.
Licensing
What license does a vendor need in Florida?
General information, not legal advice.
Appliance repair is not one of the contractor categories that section 489.105 of the Florida Statutes licenses.
The refrigerant is a federal matter. EPA rules under section 608 of the Clean Air Act require technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerant to be certified, by passing an EPA-approved test for the kind of equipment they work on. Type I certification covers servicing small appliances.
The work around an appliance can still need a licensed trade. A plumbing contractor's scope under section 489.105 includes water and natural gas lines, so a new supply line or gas connection goes to plumbing, and a new circuit goes to electrical.
Any Florida license can be checked by name or number on the state's Verify a Licensee search at myfloridalicense.com.
