What is included

What does landscaping cover?

  • Mowing, edging and string trimming on a recurring schedule.
  • Bed maintenance, weeding and shrub trimming.
  • Irrigation checks, with broken heads and zones repaired.
  • After photos attached to each visit.

Emergencies

When is it an emergency?

Landscaping is never dispatched as an emergency. It runs on a calendar.

What a storm leaves behind can be one. A limb through a roof goes out as roof repair, marked Emergency if water is coming in, and the yard is cleared on the next scheduled visit or a one-off booking.

Licensing

What license does a vendor need in Florida?

General information, not legal advice.

Mowing, edging and bed work are not among the contractor categories that section 489.105 of the Florida Statutes licenses.

Chemicals are another matter, and they bring in the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Since January 1, 2014, section 482.1562 has required anyone applying commercial fertilizer to an urban landscape to hold a limited certification for it. Section 482.156 offers a second limited certification that lets landscape maintenance crews apply herbicides to weeds in plant beds, driveways, sidewalks and patios, and treat ornamental plants with pesticides labeled with no signal word or with "caution", using handheld or backpack equipment only. Treating the lawn itself for pests is pest control as section 482.021 defines it, and lawn and ornamental pest control is one of the categories an operator can be certified in.

Irrigation has a rule of its own. Section 373.62 requires an automatic landscape irrigation system to have working technology that shuts it off when there has been enough rain, and a licensed contractor who works on such a system must test those devices, and repair or install them where needed, before completing other work on the system. For that section, a county-issued irrigation contractor license counts; section 489.105(3)(m) also lists irrigation systems in a plumbing contractor's scope.

Fertilizer and pesticide certifications can be checked on the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' license search search at aeslicensing.fdacs.gov.
