What does fire safety inspection cover?
- Portable fire extinguishers inspected, serviced, recharged or replaced.
- Fire alarm systems inspected and tested by a licensed alarm or electrical contractor.
- Fire sprinkler and standpipe inspections on the quarterly, annual, three-year and five-year cycle.

Emergencies
When is it an emergency?
Inspections are never dispatched as an emergency. They run on a calendar, booked to a date.
A fire is a 911 call before it is anything else. Water from a sprinkler head that has gone off goes out as emergency restoration, marked Emergency, and the sprinkler itself is booked here once the water is stopped.
Licensing
What license does a vendor need in Florida?
General information, not legal advice.
Florida licenses fire extinguisher work through the Division of State Fire Marshal, under section 633.304 of the Florida Statutes. Servicing, repairing, recharging, testing, inspecting, installing or hydrotesting any fire extinguisher or preengineered system takes a license from the division, issued in classes by the kind of equipment, and every individual doing the work must hold a permit as well. Licenses and permits expire on December 31 of each odd-numbered year.
Sprinkler systems have a schedule written into the law. Section 633.312 requires fire hydrants and fire protection systems on properties other than one- and two-family dwellings to be inspected under NFPA 24 and NFPA 25, quarterly, annually, every three years and every five years, by a certificated fire protection contractor or its permittees, who give the owner and the local authority having jurisdiction a uniform summary inspection report.
Fire alarms are licensed alongside electrical work. Section 489.505 defines an alarm system contractor I as one whose business includes all types of alarm systems, fire included, while an alarm system contractor II covers every kind except fire. Section 489.516 requires anyone who contracts for electrical or alarm work statewide to be certified, and anyone who contracts locally to be registered.
A fire equipment dealer license or a fire protection contractor certificate can be checked on the Division of State Fire Marshal's public portal search at citizenserve.com.
